LIM Corporation Ltd. was established in 1988 to bring "creation" and "change" to an increasingly information-oriented society.
This is the story of LIM:
LIM was established one chilly January day in 1988 under a clear blue sky.
It was a company without an established management foundation, yet had great aspirations to be recognized as a player not just in Japan, but on the world stage.
After all, if our products were accepted in the international markets, they would surely find recognition within Japan.
And so, work began on typeface products that focused on the western markets. At that time, there was no company in Japan that specialized in fonts for Western languages.
This strategy proved to be a resounding success.
In the late 1980s, our fonts had already been licensed across numerous printers and information terminals that were manufactured in Japan and shipped around the world.
We have a market presence that extends worldwide -- many times the scale of the domestic Japanese market -- so it is easy to imagine how our developments have contributed to information industry.
In 1990, the font business was right on track, but new technical demands were arising outside of the licensing of the font itself.
Companies who had neglected product evaluation in the past were requesting new QA technology.
While most Japanese companies were focused on developing new product, there were few methods to perform comprehensive evalutations or quality control.
In response, we developed product evaluation tools using original technology based off American theories of Testing Engineering.
With this technology in hand, our "Quality Assurance" was born.
We will continue to partner with information device manufacturers and utilize their advanced technology to create unique solutions in the future.
In 1994, we took our combined experience and know-how from battling on the world stage and turned our efforts toward our home country of Japan.
First, we analyzed the performance and price of our competitors' products from every angle.
We determined that font technology used in the printing and publication industries had already reached a peak, so we instead turned our attention towards paper-based printing and optical font displays like LCD and LED screens -- a market we saw as having much untapped potential.
What were needed now were not aesthetic improvements to characters, but enhancements to make fonts clearer and more legible.
This was a theme upon which we based further research in order to find how best to respond to this issue using artificial intelligence to improve Japanese fonts.
By performing this basic research and development, we produced Japanese fonts which gained us our 50% share in the mobile phone market.
Our fonts have been widely recognized for their enhanced clarity and legibility -- traits developed through our unique methods of incorporating market data into each and every new product.
Today, LIM Japanese fonts can be found in mobile phones, PDAs, car navigation systems, household appliances, electronic bulletin boards and many more products used daily by people everywhere.
In January 2004, at a venture fair held within the Tokyo International Forum, we debuted Japan's first scalable font rendering engine for mobile phones.
Through a press release in the NIKKEI, we lifted the curtain on our 3G Scalable Font Engine -- the first technology of its kind for 3G-enabled phones.
Beginning in 2004, the engine was deployed on a variety of phones and display devices, earning us a 70% share in the international 3G market.
Since then, we have succeeded in continuously providing rendering engines to match the evolving clarity and sharpness of liquid crystal display devices.
In 2005, we established our Tokyo office as part of a wider effort to bring our technology to new products such as car navigation systems, digital TVs and household appliances.
